Is every day feeling the same in that annoying, sticky way? You can’t tell the difference between what you did on Tuesday and what you can expect on Friday? Your small talk getting even more boring??
You’ve been telling yourself that something needs to change for months now. . . but you just haven’t followed through. Too tired. Bigger fish to fry. Where to even start?! We know it takes a lot of energy to build a routine but to break one in favor of trying something new with no guarantee of it being fulfilling and bringing in that elusive happiness??? Absolutely not. Things aren’t that bad, they’ll get better in a few months when things aren’t as busy, right? When there’s time and space for all the things you’ve been putting off. . . and then things never get less busy and you’re stuck on autopilot yearning for more.
You just wish there was someone around who could help you figure out what to do to mix something up and get closer to feeling like yourself without feeling like you’re tearing your carefully crafted and well-earned success to shreds just because you're bored.
You’re no stranger to thinking “I should be happy, I did all the things that are supposed to bring happiness.” Maybe you went to school, you got a job, you’re in safe housing, you can pay your bills, you’re in a long-term relationship, you bought a car, you have kids and built a family, you got promoted, the list goes on. You met these goals and maybe a lot more but you’re not even close to feeling a glimmer of happiness. No pride, just the thought of “well, what else was I supposed to do?”
You start to wonder if everyone else feels kind of “whatever” about meeting goals and when you learn they don’t, welp here comes the frustration: “why am I not happy?!?! Is something. . .wrong. . .with me?”
Look, you are not alone! This can happen for many of us conditioned to achieve greatness (especially those of us who were in gifted and talented programs as kids, or in leadership positions all through our school years, or maybe even the one our families were banking on to “make it out” and break the cycle). When doing the “right” things starts leading to the “wrong” feelings, we can sense that we’ve lost touch with what makes us feel alive and successful on our own terms.
When we’re constantly running the same routine day after day, month after month, year after year, and getting the same results that leave us unfulfilled and yearning for more, the feelings of emptiness and defeat start to creep in. Where you feel like a shell of a person just going through the motions “trying to make it through the day.”
People ask you what you’re looking forward to after work and you honestly can’t think of anything so your default answer becomes “laying down and going to sleep” or “getting a drink.” You’ve completely stopped all of your fun activities because they’re not bringing you any kind of enjoyment anymore.
You’ve noticed a general irritability and impatience in you that wasn’t always there. You have no hopes or dreams for yourself anymore because why bother? Your life’s going to look the exact same in 5 years, right? There’s nothing you can do or haven’t done already that will magically drop the life of your dreams in your lap, right?
When you’re ready to say no to helplessness, hopelessness, or just plain ol drudgery and annoyance with your current reality, I work with you to understand where you’re at, how you got there, and how we can lift you out and get you where you’d like to be instead.
As we build trust with each other, we’ll unearth the ways your body sends you messages and learn how to turn those messages into fuel for self-compassion and self-trust. WHOA, what?! Yup, lots of us are great at extending kindness and understanding to others when they're struggling, or when they've made a common mistake. But when it comes to ourselves in the same situations, we often choose harsh self-judgment. Self-compassion involves acknowledging our own humanity and inherent worth to promote overall well-being and mental health by reducing feelings of shame and isolation and strengthening emotional resilience. Self-trust allows us to strengthen our decision-making and problem-solving skills in the now and for the future.
Through self-compassion and self-trust, we’ll reveal your unbreakable self-confidence: the realistic understanding of your capacity and abilities that allows you to face challenges, take risks, and pursue your goals with a sense of inner strength and conviction. Once you’ve mastered those, we’ll assess your values to identify what’s supporting you and what’s getting in the way, and then we’ll adjust your values to better align with the life you want to be living. In every session, we’ll sift through the stories you’ve been telling yourself that have either been keeping you stuck, getting you unstuck, or something in between, to make sure we’re on track to meeting your goals.
I know firsthand what it’s like to live (and win) by a set of rules that were surprise, surprise not created in my favor. It’s exhausting and led to my burnout. Following those rules took me so far away from my essence, my true nature, that it became fossilized and I felt like I had lead in my legs whenever I tried to do anything. When I was at the end of my rope, I began a multi-year process of getting to know myself again so I could recognize my ~sparkle~ and dust it off for the world to see! Now, I share my tricks of the trade with adults in similar situations.
My role as a therapist is to provide a non-judgmental, attuned presence for you to remember who you are and who you still can be. I am not the right fit for you if you aren't open to being curious about the parts of yourself you've been trying to avoid or if you aren’t willing to experiment with relating to yourself more kindly. I am here to hold your vision of a life worth living and redirect you towards it when you’re feeling “off track.” I'm pretty sure you have a lot of the answers you're looking for swimming around within you and sometimes you just need an experienced guide who truly sees you and believes in your dreams with you to guide you through the waters.
Hi! I'm Zaakirah, a trauma-informed therapist in CA. I specialize in PTSD, depression, and burnout.
Please use the contact form below if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Each client will strengthen the core Archaeology of You skills of self-compassion, self-trust, self-confidence, and values-aligned living in their own time. More generally, each client is unique and has their own definitions of “better” so there’s no one-size-fits-all timeline for how long it will take to feel “better” with therapy.
What I can offer instead is a selection of potential ~signals~ that you’re progressing with therapy: being less hard on yourself, taking safe risks to try new things more than before, developing interpersonal boundaries and the communication skills to work through conflict with others, getting more comfortable with saying “no,” or feeling more present in each moment. Each client may achieve all, none, a few of these, or other goals at their own pace.
We'll probably laugh a lot and talk about music, food, memes, and/or whatever came up for you over the past week. We might even learn a few skills to challenge the way you're thinking and set yourself up for success. I'll support the reasons you're coming in for therapy with psychoeducation (how do depression/anxiety show up in the body, what do traumatic experiences do to our brains, etc). We'll explore and refine your values to create systems of personal accountability to guide you through making decisions that get you closer to the life you want to be living.
Individual therapy sessions are conducted via telehealth at $200 for 50 minutes. The length of treatment will vary depending on the unique needs of each client. Folks typically schedule sessions either weekly or biweekly for 6 to 12 months and sometimes longer, depending on their treatment goals. We will collaborate to determine how many sessions would work best for you.
Yes! I am an in-network provider with Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Optum, and United Healthcare.
