Therapy is about change, right?

Look - at some level, many people seek therapy because business as usual isn't cutting it. They're looking to switch something up to get relief, improve their ability to manage stressors, or just feel less alone. And hey, just considering therapy is progress in itself!

Because change can be scary/daunting/exciting/nerve-wracking/annoying/confusing/etc, I want to leave you with a treat - a lil Change Soundtrack, if you will. I'm always listening to music and I often use songs and lyrics to communicate my ideas and reflections with clients in session. Here are a few songs about change that can be used for motivation, validation, inspiration, whatever.

Enjoy!

Change Soundtrack

"I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell - I know, right now you can't tell"

Rob Thomas and Matchbox Twenty, 2003

"I'm tired of being what you want me to be, feeling so faithless, lost under the surface. . . I don't know what you're expecting of me, put under the pressure of walking in your shoes. . ."

Linkin Park, 2003

"A lot of you, you're not where you wanna be. . . "

". . . You're thinking of negative stuff
You talkin' negativity
You in that negative zone
I need you to do me a favour
I need you to know that
In order for you to get to that next level
The one thing you need to do
To go where you've never gone before
Is to change the way you think

Where your focus goes, your energy flows
Are you hearin' me?"

Disclosure, 2020

We've heard from Stacie already on the homepage, but this line is good too:

"There's gotta be more
than wanting more"

"Every time I thought I'd got it made It seemed the taste was not so sweet"

- David Bowie, 1972

Remember when this song was EVERYWHERE all the time? Maybe for good reason. . .

"I break tradition

Sometimes my tries

Are outside the lines

We've been conditioned

To not make mistakes

But I can't live that way"

". . . in your face, and the door keeps slamming, now you're feeling more and more frustrated, and you're getting all kind of impatient"

Have you ever felt this when you're trying to make something happen? Clients who work with me have and we figured out how to adjust their strategies to meet their real needs and desires.

This is one I actually listen to after I've completed something hard and I need extra celebration - feel free to add it to your own rotation! (Be warned, it contains profanities.)
